The civic test

The steps involved in registering for the civic exam

Step 1

 
I register on the test-civique.fr website by selecting the AF Annecy centre: https://test-civique.fr/inscription/5BC4D1A115382BB6D39C88747F2F69597402
 
To prepare for this exam, I can contact the OFII, or visit the official civic education website to prepare on my own: https://formation-civique.interieur.gouv.fr/.
I can also practise using the official lists of questions, available for each version of the exam: CSP,CR.
 

Step 2

 
I select a date and time for the exam and pay for my civic exam on the Alliance Française Annecy website: https://www.payasso.fr/afa/examen-civique
 

Step 3

The Alliance Française Annecy receives my application and notes the date I have chosen on my profile.
I then receive a confirmation email.
 
On the day of the exam, I bring the following with me:
- my original and valid ID
- my test-civique.fr username
- my test-civique.fr password


The civic test

 
From 1 January 2026, the civic test is compulsory for anyone applying for:
- a multi-year residence permit (Carte de Séjour Pluriannuelle),
- a residence permit (Carte de Résident),
- or French citizenship (nationalité).
 

What is the civic test?

  One-day exam     45 minutes       in-person      Levels: A1 to C2
 
This civic test assesses your knowledge of the values of the French Republic, how its institutions work, and the fundamental principles of life in society.
The exam is taken on a computer.
An official certificate will be issued to you within 24 to 48 hours after the test; it is valid for life.

Please keep a record of your login details: you will need them to access the test.
 
If you are already pre-registered with us and wish to register at another centre, you can do so directly via your Test-Civique account, without needing to remove yourself from our centre.

How is the exam conducted?

 
The civic exam is taken on a computer and consists of 40 multiple-choice questions, divided into two parts:
- Knowledge-based questions (28 questions)
- Scenario-based questions (12 questions)
 
The questions cover the five themes of civic education:
- Principles and values of the Republic,
- How French and European institutions work,
- Rights and obligations applicable in France,
- Historical, geographical and cultural landmarks,
- Real-life situations from everyday or professional life in France, to assess your ability to behave as expected.
 
For each question, only one of the four options is correct.
Maximum time allowed: 45 minutes.
Pass mark: a minimum of 32 correct answers out of 40, i.e. 80% correct.
Results will be available within 24 hours on your test-civique account.

When should I take the exam?

 
The civic exam must be taken before submitting an application for a multi-year residence permit, a permanent residence permit or citizenship.
You can take the civic test at any time and as many times as necessary.
Once obtained, the certificate is valid for life.
You will find the dates offered by our Alliance Française on the registration page.
 

Cancellation and refunds

All registrations are definitive. The test is non-refundable in the event of absence or failure to attend the examination.
In the event of cancellation of the session by the organiser, a refund or rescheduling will be offered.
